Yes, Black patients do want to help with medical research – here are ways to overcome the barriers that keep clinical trials from recruiting diverse populations

Yes, Black patients do want to help with medical research – here are ways to overcome the barriers that keep clinical trials from recruiting diverse populations Clinical trial participants are predominantly white. Despite Black and Hispanic people respectively making up 12% and 16% of the U.S. population in 2011, together they made up only 6% of clinical trial participants overall that year. Clinical trials that are representative of all patients are essential to ensure that treatments are effective for everyone. Drugs work differently for each person based on different factors. Including diverse patient populations in clinical trials makes sure these factors are accounted for. But the perception that recruiting white patients is easier, less time-consuming and more cost-efficient than recruiting underrepresented or underserved patients contributes to health disparities seen today. We are gastroenterology researchers at Morehouse School of Medicine who run clinical trials and study way

Precision physical activity prescriptions improve survival in colon cancer

Image
Precision physical activity prescriptions improve survival in colon cancer Physical activity may be associated with improved outcomes for patients undergoing postoperative treatment for Stage III colon cancer.  new study from Pennington Biomedical Research Center, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, assessed 1,696 patients who had undergone surgery and chemotherapy to treat Stage III colon cancer. The study examined how different types and intensity of physical activity might impact the length of time patients remained alive and disease-free. Specifically, researchers assessed the overall amount of physical activity the patients engaged in, as well as the type of activity. The researchers compared light and moderate physical activity, vigorous aerobic activity, brisk walking, and muscle-strengthening exercise. Although many patients with colon cancer initially beat the disease, up to one-third experience cancer relapse which is often incurable. Prior to this study, it was un

Full Genetic Architecture of RAS Cancer Gene Mutations in Human Tumors Uncovered

Full Genetic Architecture of RAS Cancer Gene Mutations in Human Tumors Uncovered Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, three other cancer centers and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health compiled a comprehensive genetic architecture atlas for mutant RAS genes in human cancers. Their four-year study of the RAS family – including the KRAS, NRAS and HRAS genes that are mutated in approximately one-third of all human cancers – found that the frequency of mutant RAS genes differs among various tumor types, age, sex and racial groups, and co-mutation patterns among RAS genes and other genes potentially can result in different clinical outcomes or identify new areas for therapeutic intervention. The work, published Sept. 8 in Cancer Research, focused on analyses of targeted next-generation sequence data of more than 600,000 mutations from more than 66,000 tumors in 51 cancer types from the AACR (American Association for Cancer Research) Project GENIE (Genomics

Novel 3D-printed light-sensing medical device could help millions of lupus patients

Image
Novel 3D-printed light-sensing medical device could help millions of lupus patients A team of engineers and doctors at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities have designed a unique 3D-printed light-sensing medical device that is placed directly on the skin and gives real-time feedback to correlate light exposure with disease flare-ups. The device could help millions of people worldwide with lupus and other light-sensitive diseases by providing access to more personalized treatments and information to determine what causes their symptoms. The research was published in Advanced Science, an interdisciplinary premium open access scientific journal. The researchers have also filed a patent on the device and the technology is available for licensing. According to the Lupus Foundation of America about 1.5 million Americans, and at least 5 million people worldwide, have a form of lupus. Light sensitivity is common in people with lupus with 40 to 70 percent of people with lupus finding that t
